The Ford Modeling Agency, or as it is known today Ford Models, is an American international modeling agency based in New York City. It was established in 1946 by Eileen Ford and her husband Gerard W. Ford. Ford Models was started in 1946 by Eileen and Gerard W. “Jerry” Ford. Ford was the first company to advance their models’ money-owed by jobs that had been completed but not yet paid. The Ford family had the tradition of allowing teenage models who originate far from New York City to stay in their home.
The company was the pre-eminent New York agency until John Casablancas of Elite Model Management opened up in the city, leading to the “model wars” of the 1980s. Ford, like many of the original agencies of the 1970s, now has to compete with a broad field of contenders, such as Women, IMG, and DNA.
The agency has represented a diverse list of models and celebrities. In 1980, the company established the Ford Supermodel of the World Contest that attracted more than 60,000 hopefuls annually from around the world. IMG Models is the international leader in talent discovery and model management, widely recognized for its diverse client roster. The agency’s offices are located in five world capitals: New York, Paris, London, Milan, and Sydney.
Legendary sports agent Mark McCormack founded IMG Models as a new division of the hugely successful IMG Worldwide. He believed models could be managed as talent in the same vein as professional athletes, actors, and other entertainers, and that their popularity could be leveraged into strong personal brands beyond the magazine page or runway. McCormack’s conviction resulted in the industry’s highest standard of excellence. By managing careers over bookings, a point of difference that has propelled IMG Models’ nonstop growth, the agency has claimed the vanguard for over two decades.
As an industry pioneer, IMG Models continues to challenge the status quo with its clients, and broaden opportunities for all of its talent.
IMG Models’ commitment to the personalities it represents is its greatest strength. The stability and depth of experience of its management team—the core of which has worked together to shape the careers of newcomers and superstars alike since the early ‘90s—allows the agency to stand out in a business where volatility is the norm.
The agency’s ability to manage and maximize a model’s career at every stage has been proven innumerable times, whether by nurturing newly discovered talent or revitalizing the professional lives of established models. IMG Models believes in the potential of the entire individual and has taken an unyielding stance against segmenting talent by race, age, or size. IMG also created the industry’s first bi-annual health initiative devoted to young models’ total wellbeing known as Model Prep; a more sustained, the year-round effort is currently in development.
In December 2013, IMG Worldwide was acquired by William Morris Endeavor and is steadily growing into a unique global sports and entertainment platform.
IMG Models boasts an impressive roster of top talent. A partial list includes fashion icons Kate Moss, Stephanie Seymour, Carolyn Murphy, Amber Valletta, Alek Wek, Laetitia Casta, Gisele Bündchen, Noah Mills, Tyson Ballou, Lauren Hutton, and China Machado; supermodels Daria Werbowy, Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss, Lara Stone, Miranda Kerr, Gigi Hadid, Ashley Graham, Anja Rubik, Karmen Pedaru, Sasha Pivovarova, Hilary Rhoda, Freja Beha Erichsen, Candice Swanepoel, Emily DiDonato, Georgia May Jagger, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Chanel Iman, Lily Donaldson, Lily Aldridge, Jessica Stam, Jon Kortejarena, Clement Chabernaud, Garret Neff, Ben Hill, and RJ Rogenski; and emerging stars Andreea Diaconu, Amanda Murphy, Devon Windsor, Xiao Wen Ju, Tilda Lindstam, Tara Lynn, Katlin Aas, Sky Ferreira, Barbara Palvin, Bella Hadid, Adam Butcher, Joel Meacock, Jordan Barrett, and Terence Telle. New York Model Management’s international staff brings a wealth of fashion savvy and experience to anticipate upcoming trends in the fashion industry. Its owner, Heinz Holba, established L.A. Models in 1985, after many years of heading agencies in Canada and Southern California.
HEINZ HOLBA, PRESIDENT & FOUNDER
In just over three decades of operation in the fast-paced, high-stakes world of modeling, founder Heinz Holba has built L.A. Models and New York Model Management into two of the most powerful and successful agencies in the industry.
Born in Austria, Holba moved to Canada to pursue Aeronautics. He got his start in the modeling industry by way of a real estate investment through which he bought Canadian Agency, Booking One in 1978. Just a year later, Holba acquired the Elite/John Casablancas Modeling Schools and Agencies Canadian franchises and soon after established ten additional agencies and schools throughout Canada and California. After managing these establishments for a number of years, working very closely with both Elite New York and Elite Paris, Holba sold them to give his full attention to the inception of his very own L.A. Models in 1985. And just a decade later was the birth of L.A.’s sister agency, New York Model Management.
Since the early 1980s, Holba has worked tirelessly to bring a significant international modeling presence to Los Angeles and increase/maintain that of New York’s. It is evident that Holba’s efforts have paid off as L.A. Models is the largest modeling agency on the West Coast and one of the most respected in the world. New York Model Management in Manhattan has achieved the same notoriety. Providing full service to its clients, New York Model Management maintains a presence in the fashion center of the country as well as booking directly into Europe and other U.S. cities.
While it hosts a boutique size, this is not to be confused with its heavy-weight influence within the modeling/fashion industry. Over the past 20 years, New York Model Management has established itself as a key player amongst its many competitors/industry counterparts. Year after year the agency exhibits/holds a solid/significant presence in all major fashion weeks including New York, London, Paris, and Milan. Combining years of knowledge, international agency experience, and undivided attention to detail and strategy, both L.A. Models and New York Model management pride themselves in taking a personal interest in cultivating and managing each model’s career to not only see momentary success but also to warrant longevity in the business. Wilhemina Models is a modeling and talent agency headquartered in Dallas, Texas, USA, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and London.
Founded in 1967 by Wilhelmina Cooper, today it provides full-service representation and management of models, entertainers, artists, musicians, and athletes. Its customers include retailers, designers, advertising agencies and catalog companies.
Wilhelmina Models was founded in 1967 by the Dutch model Wilhelmina Cooper with her husband Bruce Cooper and with Bill Weinberg and Fran Rothchild as minority partners. The company developed numerous models, including Iman, Beverly Peele, and Gia Carangi. After Wilhelmina Cooper died in 1980 at age 40, the agency was transferred to her business partners and was then brought in 1989 for around 4 million dollars by Horst-Dieter Esch, a German businessman with interests in the construction industry. Esch held discussions with Elite Model Management and Ford Models with a view to creating a large conglomerate agency that would be taken public, but this did not happen.
In 1993, Esch appointed his 21-year-old daughter Natasha Esch as president of the agency and gave her his shares as a college graduation present. When she took the position she was criticized for being too young and inexperienced, though she impressed some in the industry by suing Elite after they lured away Beverly Peele and settling for what she said was a six-figure sum; and also for dismissing the head of her Los Angeles division. In 1997 she resigned from her position and Dieter Esch succeeded her as president.
In February 2009, New Century Equity Holdings Corp., a publicly traded company, acquired Wilhelmina Models. Esch sold his stake in the agency for 22 million dollars. New Century subsequently changed its name to Wilhelmina International, Inc. and now trades under the ticker symbol ‘WHLM’.
The company now licenses its brand to third-party agencies in countries around the world, including the United States, Panama, Tokyo, and Thailand. As an extension of its talent representation business, Wilhelmina Artist Management specializes in representing entertainers and musicians.
